Some of them deliver, while some have been found associated with dubious claims of effectiveness. How about legal steroids?
But the main question here is: what are legal steroids exactly?
Defining Legal Steroids and Anabolic Steroids
Steroids are chemical compounds or substances that are naturally produced in many plants and animals top play certain biological roles in the body. According to Wikipedia, there are many types of steroids and when categorized by function, four major types are known. These include Estrogens, Androgens, Corticosteroids, and Progestogens. In other words, steroids are basically hormonal in nature. Some steroids are synthetically manufactured and clinically used as prescription drugs in the treatment of certain diseases and medical conditions such as asthma, IBD, eczema, and arthritis, among others.
However, anabolic androgenic steroids, which are mostly, synthesized analogues of the hormone testosterone, are the most common, due to their high capability to enhance muscle growth and boost athletic performance in the human body.
According to Daniel J. DeNoon, writing for the WebMD, anabolic steroids usually come with a myriad of negative consequences when used without a doctor’s prescription for athletic enhancement and muscle gain. Some of their side effects may include impotence, male breasts, infertility, shrunken testicles, development of male characteristics in women, just to name a few.
What about Legal Steroids?
On the other hand, legal steroids are bodybuilding supplements that have been found to produce almost similar benefits like anabolic steroids that are supposedly less dangerous and are legal for sale (at least for now). They are made from extracts of plants and may contain ingredients such as Zinc, vitamins, mineral nutrients and other substances that boost the process of muscle building and strength enhancement. However, some may contain powerful hormones.
Most legal steroids work by boosting protein synthesis, boosting the production of testosterone, and increasing the production of RBCs (to boost the supply of oxygen) for elevated energy production. Most legal steroids are not classified by the FDA or DEA as controlled/illegal substances at this time of writing, even though their use may be prohibited by local authorities depending on where you come from.
